भट्टिकाव्यम् (रावणवधम्) : विस्तृत-परिचयः

१. रचयिता तथा कालः (Author and Date)

• संस्कृतम्: अस्य महाकाव्यस्य रचयिता महाकविः भट्टिः। एते वलभीनरेशस्य धरसेनस्य (प्रायः सप्तमशताब्द्यां) राजसभां अलञ्चक्रुः।
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: The author of this epic is the great poet Bhatti. He adorned the court of King Dharasena of Valabhi (around the 7th century CE).

२. द्व्याश्रय-काव्यम् (A Double-Purpose Poem)

• संस्कृतम्: भट्टिकाव्यं 'द्व्याश्रयकाव्यम्' इति प्रसिद्धम्। अत्र एकेन पक्षेण रामकथा वर्णिता, अपरेण पक्षेण पाणिनीयव्याकरणस्य नियमाः सोदाहरणं दर्शिताः।
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: Bhattikavya is famous as a 'Dvyashraya Kavya' (a poem with dual purpose). On one hand, it narrates the story of Rama, and on the other, it illustrates the rules of Paninian grammar with examples.

३. चतुर्षु काण्डेषु विभाजनम् (Division into Four Sections)

• संस्कृतम्: ग्रन्थोऽयं चतुर्षु मुख्यकाण्डेषु विभक्तः।
1. प्रकीर्ण-काण्डम् (व्याकरणस्य विविधाः नियमाः)
2. अधिकार-काण्डम् (पाणिनि-सूत्राणाम् अधिकार-क्षेत्रम्)
3. प्रसन्न-काण्डम् (अलङ्कारनिरूपणम्)
4. तिङन्त-काण्डम् (लकार-प्रक्रिया)
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: The text is divided into four main sections: Prakirna-kanda (miscellaneous rules), Adhikara-kanda (governing rules), Prasanna-kanda (poetic figures/rhetoric), and Tinanta-kanda (verb conjugations).

४. ग्रन्थ-परिमाणम् (Volume of the Text)

• संस्कृतम्: अस्मिन् महाकाव्ये आहत्य द्वाविंशतिः (२२) सर्गाः राराजन्ते। एतेषु सर्गेषु रामायणस्य बालकाण्डतः आरभ्य रावणवधपर्यन्तं रामायणकथा वर्णिता।
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: There are a total of twenty-two (22) cantos in this epic. In these cantos, the story is narrated from the Bala Kanda of the Ramayana up to the killing of Ravana.

५. शास्त्र-काव्यस्य स्वरूपम् (Nature of Shastra-Kavya)

• संस्कृतम्: भट्टिः केवलं कविः न, अपितु महान् वैयाकरणोऽपि। अतः सः 'शास्त्र-काव्यम्' इति नवीनां परम्पराम् आरब्धवान्, यत्र पाण्डित्यप्रदर्शनमेव प्रधानम्।
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: Bhatti was not just a poet but also a grammarian. Thus, he started the new tradition of 'Shastra-Kavya' (scholarly poetry), where the display of erudition is paramount.

६. अलङ्कार-निरूपणम् (Illustration of Figures of Speech)

• संस्कृतम्: अस्य 'प्रसन्नकाण्डे' (१० तः १३ सर्गपर्यन्तं) शब्दालङ्काराणां (यथा-अनुप्रास-यमक) किञ्चार्थालङ्काराणां (यथा-उपमा-रूपक) अत्यन्तं क्लिष्टानि सुन्दराणि च उदाहरणानि सन्ति।
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: In the 'Prasanna-kanda' (from 10th to 13th cantos), there are very complex and beautiful examples of figures of speech related to sound (like Yamaka) and meaning (like Upama and Rupaka).

७. कवेः गर्वोक्तिः (The Poet's Bold Declaration)

• संस्कृतम्: भट्टिः ग्रन्थान्ते सगर्वं कथयति यत् एतत् काव्यं मन्दमतीनां कृते नास्ति -
व्याख्यागम्यमिदं काव्यमुत्सवः सुधियामलम्। हता दुर्मेधसश्चास्मिन् विद्वत्प्रियतया मया॥
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: At the end of the book, Bhatti proudly states that this poem is not for the dull-witted: "This poem is to be understood through commentary; it is a festival for the wise, and by me, the slow-witted are excluded due to my love for scholars."

८. व्याकरण-शिक्षणे उपयोगः (Use in Teaching Grammar)

• संस्कृतम्: पुराकाले संस्कृतविद्वांसः व्याकरणस्य शुष्क-नियमान् कण्ठस्थीकर्तुं भट्टिकाव्यस्य उपयोगं कुर्वन्ति स्म, येन कथा-माध्यमेन व्याकरणं सुलभं भवति।
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: In ancient times, Sanskrit students used Bhattikavya to memorize the dry rules of grammar, making grammar easier to learn through the medium of a story.

९. भाषा-सौष्ठवम् (Linguistic Elegance)

• संस्कृतम्: यद्यपि अत्र व्याकरणस्य प्राधान्यं वर्तते, तथापि भट्टेः काव्यकला न हीना। सः प्रकृतेः, युद्धस्य, विरहस्य च वर्णने प्रसाद-गुणेन सह ओज-गुणम् अपि उत्तमरीत्या प्रयुङ्क्ते।
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: Although grammar is dominant here, Bhatti's poetic art is not inferior. He excellently uses the Prasada (clarity) and Ojas (vigor) qualities in describing nature, war, and separation.

१०. परवर्ति-काव्येषु प्रभावः (Influence on Later Poetry)

• संस्कृतम्: भट्टिकाव्यस्य प्रभावेण अनन्तरं 'शिशुपालवधम्' (माघः) तथा 'नैषधीयचरितम्' (श्रीहर्षः) सदृशेषु पाण्डित्य-पूर्ण-काव्येषु व्याकरण-वैदुष्यं प्रदर्शितं कविभिः।
• आङ्ग्ल-अनुवादः: Under the influence of Bhattikavya, later scholarly poems like 'Shishupalavadham' (by Magha) and 'Naishadhiyacharitam' (by Sriharsha) also displayed grammatical expertise
