एकः कृपणः चतुरः च रुग्णः दान्तिकस्य वैद्यालयं गतः, तत्र दन्तोत्पाटनस्य (tooth extraction) शुल्कं पृष्टवान्। 1200 रुप्यकात्मकं शुल्कं महार्घं मत्वा, सः पुनः दान्तिकम् अल्पार्घाणाम् उपायानां विषये पृष्टवान्।
दान्तिकेनोकतम्, "एकः 300 रुप्यकात्मकः उपायः अस्ति, किन्तु अस्यां प्रक्रियायां निश्चेतकं (anasthesia) न युज्यते, येन महती तीव्रा वेदना सोढव्या भवेत् त्वया"।
रुग्णः वेदनापूर्णम् अल्पार्घम् उपायम् एनम् अङ्ग्यकरोत्।
दन्तवैद्यः रुग्णस्य दन्तम् उत्पाटितवान्, किन्तु अहो आश्चर्यम्। अखिलायां प्रक्रियायां प्रचल्यमाणायां रुग्णः तु न केवलं प्रशान्तचित्तः प्रत्युत स्मयमानः आसीत् ।
एतस्य धैर्येण प्रभावितः सन् सः रुग्णात् न केवलं शुल्कं निराकृतवान्, प्रत्युत तस्मै एव 500 रुप्यकाणि "शौर्यपुरस्काररूपेण" दत्तवान् । "भवत्समाः शूराः तु विरलाः अद्वितीयाः च। स्वस्य वेदनाः कथं निगृहीतव्याः, स्वस्य भावनाः कथम् अतिक्राम्याः एषः मूल्यवान् अध्यायः भवतः एव अधीतं मया", एतादृशैः साधुवचोभिः वैद्यः तं प्रशंसितवान् ।
सायङ्काले एषः दान्तिकः अस्य रुग्णस्य शौर्यगाथा सर्वेभ्यः वैद्येभ्यः श्रावितवान्।
कथाश्रवणसमये एतेन प्रसङ्गेण विचलितः सन् एकः अन्यः दान्तिकः झटिति उत्थितवान्, कथाकथने व्यवधानं कृत्वा सातङ्कम् उक्तवान्, "हे भगवन्, एतस्मै रुग्णाय मया एव निश्चेतकं दत्तम्, अर्धहोरां यावत् प्रतीक्षितुं च कथितम्। किन्तु तावता सः पलायितः आसीत्।"

English translation:
A miserly, yet clever, sick man went to a dentist's clinic and asked about the fee for a tooth extraction. Considering the fee of 1,200 rupees to be too expensive, he asked the dentist for cheaper alternatives.
The dentist replied, "There is one option for 300 rupees, but in this procedure, anesthesia is not used. Because of that, you will have to endure great and intense pain."
The patient accepted this painful, lower-cost option.
The dentist extracted the patient's tooth, but to his absolute surprise, throughout the entire process, the patient remained not only calm but was actually smiling.
Impressed by such courage, the dentist not only waived the fee but actually gave the man 500 rupees as a "bravery award." The doctor praised him with kind words, saying: "Heroes like you are rare and unique. I have learned a valuable lesson from you on how to suppress one's pain and overcome one's feelings."
That evening, the dentist shared the story of this patient’s valor with all the other doctors.
Upon hearing the story, another dentist became visibly disturbed. He suddenly stood up, interrupted the narration, and said in a panic:
"Oh my God! I was the one who gave that patient the anesthesia! I told him to wait for half an hour for it to take effect, but by then, he had already run away!"
