This verse is spoken by Mahārāja Daśaratha to Queen Kausalyā in the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa (Chapter 63, Verse 6). He is weeping over Rama's exile and suddenly realizes that his current suffering is the direct consequence of a grave mistake he made in his youth (accidentally killing Śravaṇa Kumāra).

The verse uses the word कर्मजम् (Karma-jam), meaning "born of the action." It scientifically posits that an action (Karma) is an energetic seed. Once planted, whether it is a poisonous seed (Aśubham) or a sweet fruit-bearing seed (Śubham), it will sprout.

It teaches that our present life is the exact printout of the code we typed in the past. We are the authors of our own joy and our own misery. When we stop blaming others and accept full ownership of our Karmas, we reclaim the power to rewrite our future.
