There is a story in the Mahābhārata, where this verse appears,
the mouse helps the cat escape a hunter's net because the mouse himself is being hunted by an owl and a mongoose. They become "friends" to survive. But once the hunter leaves and the crisis is over, the mouse refuses to go home with the cat. Why? Because the crisis that made them "friends" was over. Once the threat was gone, the cat’s natural instinct (to eat the mouse) would return.

    Modern Relevance (आधुनिक-सन्दर्भः)
This is the ancient Sanskrit equivalent of the famous modern geopolitical maxim popularized in the 19th century by Lord Palmerston: "We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual."
Whether in corporate negotiations, international relations, or setting personal boundaries, expecting people to act against their own self-interest purely out of "friendship" is naive. Ancient Indian wisdom teaches us to be highly cooperative and friendly, but to always keep our eyes open. A true leader navigates the world with goodwill (Sadbhāvanā) but never with blind trust (Andhaviśvāsa). Always adapt to the shifting sands of time!

IKS psychology warns that placing absolute, blind trust in anyone based on past friendship is a strategic vulnerability.
