Are you lowering your standards just because you are "thirsty"?
In life or in our careers, when we are desperate for a job, funding, or attention, it is very easy to compromise our values. We might take a toxic job, accept less than we are worth, or beg for favors from people who don't respect us.

But ancient Indian wisdom gives us the ultimate icon of self-respect: the Cātaka bird.
"May the Cātaka bird live long! It is the only bird with true self-respect. Even if it is dying of thirst, it will never drink dirty water from a puddle. It will either die thirsty, or it will ask the clouds themselves for pure rain!"

The Modern Lesson: Don't drink from puddles! If you have high skills and strong values, maintain your boundaries. If you need help or opportunities, approach the top—the best organizations and the most noble leaders (the "Clouds"). And if the right opportunity isn't there, have the dignity to endure the struggle gracefully rather than selling yourself short. Your self-respect is your greatest wealth!

Don’t take this as ego; it’s about self-respect and self-value.
